Wondering how some organizations are embracing the #GivingTuesday movement and getting involved? In this post, Kesi Gardner, digital media & communications specialist for Africare, explains what they’re doing for #GivingTuesday and how they’re doing it, too.
1. Why did your organization decide to become a #GivingTuesday partner?
Africare has spent over 40 years “giving back” to Africa. #GivingTuesday aligns perfectly with our mission and more recently our What Are You Thankful For campaign (#WAYTF) where we are asking our donors, staff and beneficiaries to answer one simple question: “What Are You Thankful For?”
We also have a strong relationship with the UN Foundation and other partners under the #GivingTuesday umbrella and felt that this would not only bring awareness to the issues we care about but would also encourage America to take action and give back to people who need it the most; particularly during the upcoming holiday season.
2. What is your organization planning for #GivingTuesday?
We kicked off our What Are You Thankful For campaign in October by inviting kids from the community to Africare House for a Pumpkin Patch Festival. This month, we are using social media to share #WAYTF testimonials from people all around the world who want to tell the world what they are thankful for.
This will continue throughout November leading up to #GivingTuesday and will end after Thanksgiving.
3. What are you doing to get your community involved in this initiative?
We encourage our community to share their #WAYTF story with us, and we will continue to post as many of the photos and sentiments that we receive this month on Facebook, Twitter and on our website.
