How they are participating

While Doctors of the World provides lifesaving care and assistance in more than 70 countries around the world, we typically do not respond to domestic emergencies. However, given the current situation in much of the tri-state area due to Hurricane Sandy, we are launching a medical relief program to assist those who remain without access to medical care, in addition to their other needs.

Doctors of the World's relief efforts will focus on some of the most vulnerable people who suffered from Hurricane Sandy, families who nearly 3 weeks later are still living without water, heat, electricity, or sanitation.

Our plan is to launch a "TREAT, CONNECT AND RESTORE" initiative as soon as possible. The objectives are:

TREAT the most vulnerable individuals with unmet health needs, including respiratory diseases and mental health issues; providing sub-acute care, home-based care, and distribute health and hygiene kits as needed.

CONNECT pharmacy services, such as prescription medications and refills, and primary care physicians to displaced and affected individuals regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.

RESTORE the local health service delivery system by working with local providers and city health officials.

Doctors of the World is an international humanitarian organization that sends volunteer doctors and other medical professionals, equipment and supplies to the world's most vulnerable populations, providing needed medical servces to those who are affected by war, natural disasters, disease, famine, poverty or exclusion, while raising public awareness.

Please consider making a donation today to support the work of Doctors of the World's efforts in the Rockaways. On behalf of the people that we serve, and our teams on the ground, we greatly appreciate your generous support.

Some of our other current projects include:

Doctors of the World is working on the borders of Syria, helping to save the lives of 500,00 Syrian refugees, mostly women and children, who have fled for their lives to bordering countries to escape the brutal war.

The Republic of Mali is also facing a similar crises, The civil war affecting this African country since January has displaced some 200,000 people who are seeking refuge in neighboring countries. Doctors of the World is providing vital medical help.

In Haiti, Southeast Asia, Somalia - wherever we are needed, Doctors of the World helps people to get immediate and long-term medical care.
