How they are participating

Give the Gift of LITERACY! The arts are one of the most effective, meaningful and efficient methods for teaching literacy to a wide range of learning styles and levels. In support of "Giving Tuesday" for every donation we receive on November 27 of $250 or greater, or for any recurring donation of $25/month or more, we will provide one arts experience for families and children in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area. The training we give allow teachers and parents to reach all types of learners, deepening understanding and creating excitement about learning. Be part of this movement! Give to Story Tapestries on Tuesday, November 27, and be part of the "Giving Tuesday" initiative while helping us combat illiteracy! Our programs not only establish the building blocks for reading and writing, but also more importantly instill a passion for learning, powerful enough to change the course of a life. We will be able to reach hundreds more students, teachers and parents. Help us stop the illiteracy cycle today! Currently, 44% of elementary and 43% of secondary students in DC Public Schools are below grade level in reading. (2010 tests) According to a United Way study, illiteracy costs the US $20 billion each year. Educators are observing a wider range of reading levels in their classroom with a lack of assistance to help close the gap of understanding. Parents and students are facing a need so high that the programs available to them are insufficient.
