How they are participating

USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is the philanthropic organization of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the United States. The UN Refugee Agency currently cares for 35 million worldwide with 7,600 international staff, working in 125 countries.
UNHCR was established in 1951. Since then, we have been at the frontline of every refugee and displaced persons conflict. We have helped over 50 million of the most vulnerable people – especially women and children.

Refugees are people driven from their homes when violence erupts in their country, or when they are persecuted because of their political or religious beliefs. By the time they arrive at a place of refuge, many are not only destitute, but barely clinging to life. At such moments, UNHCR’s priority is to provide the basic goods that save and sustain life: shelter from the elements, a jerry-can to fetch water and a blanket with which to stay warm. Such items can mean the difference between life and death.

Your support enables UNHCR to immediately respond so we can be the first in and the last out of every crisis: We were the first-responders to provide emergency assistance when the conflict started in Syria, first to help with protection and human rights in Darfur, Sudan and Mali and first to help build infrastructure relief for refugee host-countries like Lebanon and Jordan. We were also the first relief agency to respond when the catastrophic Tyhpoon Haiyan struck the Philippines impacting over 9 million people.

UNHCR is joining Google+ and Mashable as a partner for the first ever live "Hangout-a-thon," a 12-hour event on Google+ that will feature content from a variety of nonprofits, celebrities and social responsible businesses. We will be featuring a conversation with Rahma and her husband Abdulahi, Somali refugees living in Nairobi, Kenya. Due to the work of UNHCR and Refugees United, Rahma was reconnected with her father, brother and three sisters after 22 years of separation.

On behalf of refugees worldwide, we thank you for participating in Giving Tuesday and for supporting the refugees whom we serve. Thank you.
