At AARP Experience Corps, we believe every child has the right to learn to read fluently and to reap the joys and opportunities that literacy provides.
Our evidence-based tutoring and mentoring program guides low-income children in kindergarten through third grade on the path to reading proficiently and confidently.
AARP Experience Corps’s approach is simple, but effective: older adult volunteer members are trained and deployed to high-need public elementary schools, offering small group and one-to-one tutoring that builds literacy skills for Kindergarten through 3rd grade students identified as in need of intervention.
Today, some 2,000 volunteers serve more than 22,000 elementary school students in 19 communities across the United States.
AARP Experience Corps will use Giving Tuesday to enhance our year-end giving campaign by encouraging our online friends to donate, volunteer or participate in our Giving Tuesday conversations via Facebook and Twitter. We will also share testimonials and videos about our program.

Beyond Pesticides works with allies in protecting public health and the environment to lead the transition to a world free of toxic pesticides. Toxic pesticides and contaminating chemicals are threatening the health of our ecosystems and people. Pesticides contaminate food, weaken species health, and sicken our children. Beyond Pesticides seeks to protect healthy air, water, land and food for ourselves and future generations. By forging ties with governments, nonprofits and people who rely on these natural resources, we reduce the need for unnecessary pesticide use and protect public health and the environment. Given governmental limitations in providing hands-on services to the public, Beyond Pesticides support to determine an appropriate course of action by: • identifying and interpreting hazards; and, • designing safe pest management programs. Beyond Pesticides believes long-term community and ecosystem health depends on active and informed participation by local stakeholders. We provide these services so that citizens may make informed choices and adopt practices to protect themselves and their families from unnecessary exposure to pesticides. With these tools, citizens can make informed decisions, adopt sustainable practices, and improve community-wide pest management, including policies that govern pesticide use. Beyond Pesticides believes long-term community and ecosystem health depends on active and informed participation by local stakeholders.

The mission of the Cancer Support Community is to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. The Cancer Support Community develops and delivers evidence-based programs, including: support groups, social activities, and online resources designed to help people identify and address their specific needs and concerns – from diagnosis, treatment and post-treatment, to long-term survivorship and/or end of life. These programs – both in person and online – improve the health and wellbeing of people touched by cancer. Our educational programs are sought after as critical tools for building effective partnerships among patients, family members, friends, and the health care team. Last year, the Cancer Support Community delivered over $40 million in free services to people living with cancer – patients, caregivers, family members, and friends. The Cancer Support Community’s Research & Training Institute is the first of its kind in the United States dedicated to psychosocial, behavioral and survivorship research and training in cancer. The Institute examines the critical role of social and emotional support for those living with cancer and studies the distinctive needs of survivors and caregivers throughout the cancer experience. The Cancer Support Community is leading the way for the care and advocacy of all those affected by cancer. The Cancer Support Community aims to transform the landscape of social and emotional support for people who have been diagnosed with cancer, and for their caregivers, families, and friends. Your donation will put us one step closer to ensuring that no one faces cancer alone.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
Nonprofit
Today, and every day, 900 children are infected with HIV. That is 900 too many. We’re headed for zero – and we need your help to get there. We know we can get the number of new infections to zero and we’ve joined the global health community in setting a goal to do so by 2015.
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation has long been a leader in providing services to prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child, which include counseling, testing, and access to care and treatment for expectant mothers. The work that we’ve done together has greatly decreased the number of children who contract HIV from their mothers, but we need to do better than that -- and we will.
On this #GivingTuesday – a day in which people focus on what they can do for others – will you pledge to help end pediatric AIDS?

Next Tuesday, the Employment Justice Center is participating in the effort to create a National Day of Giving. We hope to create “twitter storm” with two purposes – to educate people about the widespread problem of wage theft for low-wage workers, and to let them know that they can help support efforts to stop wage theft through www.givingtuesday.org. Many people are unaware of how widespread wage theft is. It is estimated that two-thirds or more workers had their wages stolen last week. This means that their employers have not paid them the wages they are entitled to. This may mean that they are paid less than minimum wage, not paid overtime or often, just not paid at all. For example, Andres H. was a construction worker on an apartment building in Washington DC. For his first two and a half weeks on the job, he was paid the promised rate of $15 per hour. Then his boss started making excuses, saying that the owner of the building hadn’t paid him, so he couldn’t paid the workers. The boss kept delaying payments until Andres decided that he’d had enough and left the job when he was owed $1,800 for three weeks of work. Beyond not being able to pay his bills, Andres stated that what bothered him even more than the money was the disrespect. It was frustrating that even though he did good work and worked hard, his employer would not pay him the wages he had earned. Even in cases when the money is recovered, wage theft can destroy a person’s home and security. For two years, three separate companies failed to pay Cathy A. for her work. She was owed a total of $11,000 in unpaid wages. After visiting the Employment Justice Center's Workers' Rights Clinic, Cathy eventually recovered her unpaid wages, but she had already been evicted from her apartment and her car was repossessed. On Tuesday, we are asking our supporters to tweet or post one of the following messages, or one of their own, to everyone they know….and ask them to ask everyone to retweet and share the message. We want to create a “tweet” storm of awareness and support for the fight against wage theft while also supporting a National Day of Giving • Two-thirds of low-wage workers were not paid what they earned last week. #stopwagetheft, #ejc, #givingtuesday • Employers who steal from their workers usually don’t file payroll taxes either. #stopwagetheft, #ejc, #givingtuesday • An average low-wage worker loses $2634 each year, often while trying to support a family. #stopwagetheft, #ejc, #givingtuesday

The DC EJC is organizing a "Twitter Storm" where we will be asking our volunteers and allies to tweet about about wage theft, one of the most common employment issues facing low-income workers in DC. Wage theft is when employers have not paid their employees the wages they are entitled to either by denying them the minimum wage, overtime or often, simply not paying them at all. It is estimated that two-thirds or more workers have their wages stolen every week.
Can you help us spread the word about how to support the fight against wage theft by tweeting between 1:30 and 3:30 on Tuesday, November 27th? Some example tweets include:
Two-thirds of low-wage workers were not paid what they earned last week. bit.ly/QZb3YR #wagetheft, #dcejc, #givingtuesday
Employers who steal from their workers usually don’t file payroll taxes either. bit.ly/QZb3YR #wagetheft, #dcejc, #givingtuesday
An average low-wage worker loses $2634 each year oftn while trying to support a fam bit.ly/QZb3YR #wagetheft, #dcejc, #givingtuesday
On thanksgiving we gave thanks, now let’s give back to stop #wagetheft #dcejc #givingtuesday bit.ly/QZb3YR
