In 2012 we had more than 2,000 recognized #GivingTuesday™ partners from all 50 states of the United States.  They were either registered charities [a 501(c)3] with a specific #GivingTuesday initiative, or they are for-profit businesses, schools, religious or community groups who committed to spearhead a project that will benefit at least one 501(c)3.

#GivingTuesday is  an umbrella under which  many exciting projects take place!  We are not a funding organization and each partner organization is responsible for its own initiative.

We invite you to contact us here for more information. Meanwhile, please read on for ways you can support a #GivingTuesday action now! What will YOU give on #GivingTuesday?

“We had the best time today at THE LION KING. To be able to attend as a family of four and see our 16 year old boy with autism enjoy himself so completely on Broadway for the first time that it brought tears of joy to even my husband! Thank you and please don't let it be Joey's last Broadway show! How can we help?” – Family impacted by TDF’s Autism Theatre Initiative

1 in 88 children are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Very often, families in the autism community are reluctant to attend public events for fear of others judging their child’s behavior. As an arts service organization committed to making theatre affordable and accessible to all, Theatre Development Fund created the Autism Theatre Initiative which provides a safe and welcoming environment for families to enjoy Broadway theatre - often for the first time.

In 2013, we will present autism-friendly performances of four Broadway shows: ELF, THE MUSICAL, SPIDERMAN: TURN OFF THE DARK, NEWSIES, and THE LION KING. To keep expanding this vital program, we need your support on #GivingTuesday. We hope that you will help us share theatre with families on the spectrum.

  • Employment Justice Center

    Nonprofit

The DC EJC is organizing a "Twitter Storm" where we will be asking our volunteers and allies to tweet about about wage theft, one of the most common employment issues facing low-income workers in DC. Wage theft is when employers have not paid their employees the wages they are entitled to either by denying them the minimum wage, overtime or often, simply not paying them at all. It is estimated that two-thirds or more workers have their wages stolen every week.

Can you help us spread the word about how to support the fight against wage theft by tweeting between 1:30 and 3:30 on Tuesday, November 27th? Some example tweets include:

Two-thirds of low-wage workers were not paid what they earned last week. bit.ly/QZb3YR #wagetheft, #dcejc, #givingtuesday

Employers who steal from their workers usually don’t file payroll taxes either. bit.ly/QZb3YR #wagetheft, #dcejc, #givingtuesday

An average low-wage worker loses $2634 each year oftn while trying to support a fam bit.ly/QZb3YR #wagetheft, #dcejc, #givingtuesday

On thanksgiving we gave thanks, now let’s give back to stop #wagetheft #dcejc #givingtuesday bit.ly/QZb3YR

For low-income workers #wagetheft means severe consequences: missed payments and even foreclosures bit.ly/QZb3YR #dcejc

  • Employment Justice Center

    Nonprofit

Next Tuesday, the Employment Justice Center is participating in the effort to create a National Day of Giving. We hope to create “twitter storm” with two purposes – to educate people about the widespread problem of wage theft for low-wage workers, and to let them know that they can help support efforts to stop wage theft through www.givingtuesday.org. Many people are unaware of how widespread wage theft is. It is estimated that two-thirds or more workers had their wages stolen last week. This means that their employers have not paid them the wages they are entitled to. This may mean that they are paid less than minimum wage, not paid overtime or often, just not paid at all. For example, Andres H. was a construction worker on an apartment building in Washington DC. For his first two and a half weeks on the job, he was paid the promised rate of $15 per hour. Then his boss started making excuses, saying that the owner of the building hadn’t paid him, so he couldn’t paid the workers. The boss kept delaying payments until Andres decided that he’d had enough and left the job when he was owed $1,800 for three weeks of work. Beyond not being able to pay his bills, Andres stated that what bothered him even more than the money was the disrespect. It was frustrating that even though he did good work and worked hard, his employer would not pay him the wages he had earned. Even in cases when the money is recovered, wage theft can destroy a person’s home and security. For two years, three separate companies failed to pay Cathy A. for her work. She was owed a total of $11,000 in unpaid wages. After visiting the Employment Justice Center's Workers' Rights Clinic, Cathy eventually recovered her unpaid wages, but she had already been evicted from her apartment and her car was repossessed. On Tuesday, we are asking our supporters to tweet or post one of the following messages, or one of their own, to everyone they know….and ask them to ask everyone to retweet and share the message. We want to create a “tweet” storm of awareness and support for the fight against wage theft while also supporting a National Day of Giving • Two-thirds of low-wage workers were not paid what they earned last week. #stopwagetheft, #ejc, #givingtuesday • Employers who steal from their workers usually don’t file payroll taxes either. #stopwagetheft, #ejc, #givingtuesday • An average low-wage worker loses $2634 each year, often while trying to support a family. #stopwagetheft, #ejc, #givingtuesday
