#GAgives on #GivingTuesday

18 Nov 2017 by GivingTuesday

Around the country, communities are coming together on #GivingTuesday. Our community leaders range from volunteer leaders to community foundations to large nonprofit organizations. What they have in common is a belief that bringing the community together around the spirit of collective generosity on #GivingTuesday has ripple effects far beyond the day. In this series, we’re sharing some of the highlights of #GivingTuesday community campaigns.

Q&A with Betsy Reid, #GAgives

Q. Why did Georgia Gives Day join up with the #GivingTuesday movement?

A. To expand the reach of, and resources behind, our annual day of giving, we at the Georgia Center for Nonprofits are uniting Georgia Gives Day—now known as GAgives—with the global #GivingTuesday movement. This November 28, we’re honored to join more than 80 community campaigns across the United States, and participants in 98 countries, for the sixth annual #GivingTuesday as GAgives on #GivingTuesday.

Q. How does #GivingTuesday help you expand your impact in Georgia?

A. We’re excited about becoming Georgia’s official #GivingTuesday community campaign for many reasons: the potential for growth in reach and impact; greater access to resources, training, expert support, and peer knowledge-sharing; and the opportunity to rally Georgia for the end-of-year giving season with a truly unified kickoff event.

Q. Tell us about your campaign. What’s your goal? How are you building awareness and excitement?

A. Year after year, we work with a coalition of corporate, civic, creative, and media partners to get the word out and grow our impact — in donors engaged and dollars raised, as well as awareness grown of the work and worth of our state’s nonprofits. We get the word out in creative ways to excite the community — from celebrity PSAs to elevator displays, a Twitter Party, a #GivingTuesday morning “command center” with 70+ nonprofits at a local broadcast station, a day-of takeover of digital billboards, and much more.

Q. Tell us something unique about your campaign this year.

A. Each year, Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Mike Luckovich of The Atlanta-Journal Constitution pens a GAgives cartoon — this year’s highlights the promise of our new partnership with #GivingTuesday. We run a social media contest inviting our followers to like or share the cartoon, and pull one random winner to receive the signed original.

Q. Is there a campaign in #GAgives on #GivingTuesday that you are particularly excited about?

A. Our top nonprofit last year was Enduring Hearts, a nonprofit that raises funds toward pediatric heart research benefitting children who have had heart transplants. This year, not only do they have a 30 to 1 matching grant, they are hosting a fun event, called Party with a Pulse, to bring together the community together with their staff and supporters on #GivingTuesday. https://www.enduringhearts.org/
