Mapping Generosity in Latin America and the Caribbean

6 Jan 2025 by GivingTuesday

Studies on philanthropic practices have significantly advanced, broadening their scope and depth in recent years. However, most of this research has focused on the Global North, leaving Latin America and the Caribbean with fragmented knowledge, often relying on partial or anecdotal data. This makes it difficult for social sector researchers and practitioners to fully understand the dynamics of generosity in the region, as findings from one country are not always applicable to the cultural, sociodemographic, and economic realities of others.

In response, the GivingTuesday Latin America and Caribbean Hub (GivingTuesday LAC Hub) launched the “Generosity in Latin America and the Caribbean Report,” to better understand the dynamics of philanthropic practices by reflecting on existing data, identifying current limitations, and establishing a foundation for deeper and more strategic knowledge about generosity in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Exploring the Context and Practices

The study is organized into four chapters:

1. The socioeconomic context of giving and donating practices.

2. Patterns of formal philanthropy and other expressions of generosity.

3. Trends in 10 countries, including philanthropic landscape, giving behaviors, and contributions of time and money.

4. Conclusions and recommendations for stakeholders.

A Unique Philanthropic Landscape

Latin America and the Caribbean have a distinct philanthropic environment, shaped by their cultural, linguistic, and geographical diversity, as well as a rich mix of indigenous, colonial, and modern influences. Traditions of community philanthropy, informal giving practices, and mutual support reflect the region’s legacy of generosity. Studies have shown that practices in the region extend beyond monetary contributions. In countries such as Mexico and Brazil, a vast majority of the population views giving as an essential act, with a marked emphasis on informal support directed toward individuals rather than institutions. This stands in contrast to regions like North America and Europe, where established charitable organizations are often the primary recipients of generosity.

However, significant gaps remain in the availability and quality of data, which limits the ability to fully understand the philanthropic sector and the diverse ways of giving in the region. Imported frameworks and methodologies may fail to capture the nuances of generosity in this context. Reliable and comprehensive data are critical for informed strategies and policies, helping to measure progress, evaluate impact, and promote positive narratives about generosity.

Strengthening the Sector with Data

Without accurate data, the region’s philanthropic practices remain underestimated both regionally and globally. This invisibility limits the ability of researchers, practitioners, and funders to develop informed strategies and policies, reducing the potential impact of the philanthropic sector. The report emphasizes that having accurate data is essential to foster the growth of generosity in Latin America and the Caribbean. Such data help identify where to focus efforts, provide a solid foundation for measuring progress, and aid in evaluating the impact of initiatives over time. Additionally, reliable information strengthens positive narratives that can encourage greater investment in capacity-building within the philanthropic sector. The report also notes that data are critical to supporting advocacy efforts, such as driving changes in public policies, improving tax incentives, or redefining the legal concept of public good—key aspects for enhancing the sector’s effectiveness and sustainability.

Key recommendations for stakeholders include:

  • Investing in inclusive research that reflects the region’s diversity.
  • Fostering local partnerships and strengthening intermediary organizations.
  • Raising visibility through positive narratives about generosity.
