$3.1 Billion in Giving & Millions United Around Generosity to Celebrate GivingTuesday 2023

29 Nov 2023 by GivingTuesday

Critical support for communities and causes donated in just 24 hours, as GivingTuesday marks more than $13 billion total in giving since its launch in 2012

GivingTuesday, the global generosity movement, reports a wave of generosity as millions of people worldwide participated in acts of giving during the annual GivingTuesday celebration on November 28, 2023.

The GivingTuesday Data Commons estimates that giving in the United States alone totaled $3.1 billion, a modest increase of 0.6% from 2022. 34 million adults in the U.S. participated in GivingTuesday in some way (a 10% decrease from 2022, mirroring trends in the nonprofit sector over the past year), contributing critical support to causes, communities, and non-profit organizations as they kick off the giving season this year.

GivingTuesday inspired people around the world to give their time, skills, goods, voice, and more, showing that everyone has something to give and every act of generosity counts. Additional results and deeper analysis of giving will be shared in the coming weeks.

“We are so inspired to see a show of generosity of this magnitude every year. Our goal with GivingTuesday, not just on the day itself but year-round, is to create an ecosystem of giving that helps communities, causes, and organizations across the globe,” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s Chief Executive Officer. “However, we are concerned to see a decline in participation in line with giving trends from the past year. GivingTuesday’s mission is to inspire generosity among as many people as possible, not just raise as many dollars as possible. Generosity has such important correlations with civic participation, community cohesion, and well-being.”

What started in 2012 as a simple idea—a day that encouraged people to do good—has grown into a worldwide phenomenon inspiring millions of people to give back and reach out in kindness each year. GivingTuesday is now a year-round global generosity movement with a distributed network of entrepreneurial leaders who have launched national movements in nearly 100 countries. At the grassroots level, people and organizations participate in GivingTuesday in every single country in the world. Malawi, Georgia, Seychelles, and Indonesia joined as official GivingTuesday country movements in 2023.

“Every year the creativity, commitment, time, and spirit put towards GivingTuesday by our leaders, community members, and many millions of generous people across every country is a reminder of what’s possible when we work together for the greater good,” Curran added.

In the Philippines, Rhea, Princess, Janice, and Jessa packed 100 snack bags for homeless children. They’re part of a giving circle that prepares monthly meals year-round for homeless families and have been in on the GivingTuesday action since 2020!

Togo celebrated GivingTuesday for the first time this year. They brought the community together for a day of sports, wellness, cleaning up the beach, and raising awareness for how we can work together to build a better world.

The #GivingTuesday Sparks in Sierra Leone made their own generosity wall to inspire other students to give and to be kind.

For most of us, a school bus is just that—a vehicle that takes students to school. But in Liberia, it’s a beacon of hope, an instrument of change, and now, thanks to GivingTuesday Liberia.

GivingTuesday Community leaders in Colima, a small state in the west of Mexico, collected funds and school supply donations for three kindergarten/primary schools in needy areas. The sign says “Be a leader of radical generosity.”

St Marys in Canada is one of the longest-running #GivingTuesday community campaigns. Their campaign this year was centered on celebrating the concept of neighbors.

In New Bern, NC #GivingTuesday Community leaders organized an event in the park for nonprofits to celebrate, raise awareness, and rally more giving.

Year-round, GivingTuesday inspires people to come together through cause- and culture-based coalitions in towns, cities, and regions of all sizes to spark civic engagement, organize community care efforts, uplift nonprofit capacity, and coalesce support and advocacy.
