Millions Worldwide Celebrate GivingTuesday 2022 with Acts of Generosity & Giving

30 Nov 2022 by GivingTuesday

$3.1 billion of critical support for communities and causes donated in just 24 hours during the annual global celebration of generosity.

GivingTuesday, the global generosity movement now in its 10th anniversary year, reports a wave of generosity as people worldwide committed to acts of giving and service during the annual GivingTuesday celebration on November 29, 2022.

The GivingTuesday Data Commons estimates that giving in the United States alone totaled $3.1 billion representing a 15% increase compared to GivingTuesday 2021, and a 25% increase since 2020. 37 million adults in the U.S. participated in GivingTuesday in some way, a 6% increase from 2021, contributing much-needed and critical support to causes, communities, and non-profit organizations as they kick off the giving season this year in the face of substantial economic challenges and continued volatility.

Each year since its launch in 2012, GivingTuesday’s vision for a re-imagined world built on shared humanity, kindness, and giving, even in the face of a multitude of crises and deepening division, has continued to inspire generosity, community connection, and civic engagement across the globe.

Additional results and deeper analysis of giving, including global statistics, will be shared in the coming weeks.

“GivingTuesday 2022 was another impactful day of community-centered generosity, where people in every single country in the world collectively prioritized giving back and celebrated that we all have something to give and we all can create change,” said Asha Curran, Chief Executive Officer of GivingTuesday. “The most magical part of GivingTuesday, the special and unique characteristic that drives this generosity movement, is that this remarkable day of giving is made possible by the many and not the few; everyday people’s kindness, acts of generosity, and commitment to a better world fueled this day of good. This swell of generosity was possible only because people showed up for each other and with each other. We know this is just a preview of the continued good that will happen throughout the rest of this year and the year to come.”

Launched to inspire generosity and reimagine a world where giving and generosity are a part of everyday life, GivingTuesday is now a year-round global generosity movement with a distributed network of innovative and dedicated leaders spearheading national movements in more than 85 countries. Over the past 10 years, it has inspired billions of dollars in donations in the US and countless acts of kindness and civic participation the world over year-round. People and organizations participate in GivingTuesday in every single country and territory in the world. Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Cyprus, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, North Macedonia, and Zimbabwe joined as official GivingTuesday country movements in 2022.

As people face unparalleled division and continued crisis and uncertainty, GivingTuesday unites communities under a shared mission to build a better world. The organization continues to expand its global reach and leadership network and increase the effectiveness, strength, and resiliency of the social sector through data and insights. The movement has also proved to be a powerful intervention for countries facing devastating disasters and crises, enabling people to quickly come together and organize, united by generosity and giving, to ensure the health, safety, and resilience of their communities.

GivingTuesday 2022:  Inspiring Stories of Generosity

Year-round, GivingTuesday inspires organizations, towns, cities, or neighborhoods, and people who are united by culture, identity, or a cause they care about together in service of inspiring generosity, and for GivingTuesday 2022, local leaders organized creative and innovative events, drives, campaigns, and other activations. Examples include:

  • GivingTuesday Ukraine hosted an online festival of giving where 1,000 people shared words of kindness, made donations to local organizations, and inspired each other by posting about their good deeds. They also added 200 new generosity initiatives on their Map of Good Deeds.
  • GivingTuesday Pakistan and 70 volunteers visited flood-affected areas to bring much-need supplies and support to communities in crisis after the devastating floods that ravaged regions across the country in June.
  • GivingTuesday Guam took their annual food drive on the road with their first GivingTuesday bus tour and donated 1,000 items to local organizations.
  • This year national campaigns in Italy, Lebanon, Senegal, Poland, the Philippines, and more encouraged and inspired generosity with powerful storytelling campaigns that included photos, testimonials, and videos explaining not only how people give but also why they give.
  • Landmarks across the globe shone brightly in honor of GivingTuesday, including Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the Agbar Tower in Barcelona, Petřín Tower in Prague, and Niagara Falls.
  • GivingTuesday’s Spark youth leaders worldwide encouraged others to give back with their generosity projects, including the Kenya SPARK group’s community cleanup in the town of Mathare and their football match to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse, 12-year-old Sammie Vance who had more than 3,000 kids signed up to participate in her project to share smiles, and 6-year-old Kollin Matthews who teamed up with retailer Bombas to donate 2,022 pairs of socks to orphans.
  • Several new coalition campaigns launched in time for their first GivingTuesday this year, including #GiveNative, a group raising awareness for Native-led organizations; #MoreThanSurvival, which brings together several grassroots humanitarian organizations and mutual aid groups at the forefront of supporting refugees in Lebanon, Greece, Serbia, Bosnia, France, Greece, and the United Kingdom; #TuesdaysforTrash, a grassroots environmental movement mobilizing individuals globally to help create a more livable home on this planet; and #FashionGives, which supports women founders leading sustainable solutions in fashion. While identity-based campaigns like Giving Gap, #LatinxGive, and LaunchGood inspired giving within their communities once again this year. Countless cities, towns, states, and neighborhoods inspired millions of generous actions in ways that honor their location, culture and history.
  • Passion for the World Cup met the passion for generosity on GivingTuesday 2022: DiaDeDoar held a viewing party on YouTube, GivingTuesday Senegal and DiaDeDoar hosted an Instagram Live with partners where the power of football as a way to engage with communities and players who give back were celebrated, and England’s team captain encouraged people to give to one of his favorite causes.
  • Coalitions, organizations, and individuals leaned into creativity and fun as they encouraged people to join in and give back– from a town crier in Worthing, UK, who spread the news about #GivingTalents for GivingTuesday to #WYGivesWithPride’s end-of-day dance party on Instagram Live to celebrate every partner organization to a group of small business owners who auctioned off donated chairs that local artistic neighbors revived and painted to raise support for a Canadian church’s free community meals. A group of friends in Nigeria came together to donate a mural in honor of a local hero, the founder of the orphanage in Benue State, while an environmental organization in Malaysia gave people a behind-the-scenes look at coral reef spawning to encourage support for marine life.

Established in 2012 at New York’s 92nd Street Y and incubated in its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact as a day to do good, GivingTuesday has grown into a year-round global generosity movement with 85+ official country movements that drives an increase in giving through its leadership network and programs.
